Test on Blood latent in feaces FOB test
The test detects hemoglobin in the feces, which helps to detect a number of intestinal diseases early. It is characterized by high specificity and appropriate sensitivity.
A positive test result does not immediately mean that you have a medical condition, but it is a clear reason to visit a doctor. The same test is used in laboratories.
Important for the pharmacist
The Fecal Occult Blood Test should be performed once a year by people over 35. After the age of 50, due to the high risk of developing intestinal diseases (including cancer), the test is absolutely necessary. This test should be recommended to all patients with a family history of bowel cancer – this disease tends to run in families! Regular control of fecal occult blood is also recommended in people who lead a sedentary lifestyle, eat a lot of meat and/or little fiber and vegetables, or are overweight. The sensitivity of the Fecal Occult Blood Test is 40 ng of hemoglobin in 1 ml of the extraction solution.
Important for the patient
To perform the test correctly, a small stool sample is needed: it is enough to cover the surface of the applicator with a thin layer. If the sample size is too large, the test result may be invalid. The method of collecting the stool sample is important. Don’t take it from one spot. You need to “screw” the tip of the applicator into three different places to a depth of about one centimeter. For the obtained result to be reliable, the test should be repeated once or twice, several days apart.
